Data Goyá is a multidisciplinary Institute based in Brazil, working locally, regionally, and globally, at the crossroads of digital technologies, legal advocacy, education and knowledge. Our team brings together legal professionals, technologists, policy experts, and grassroots activists committed to building just digital futures.
The Data Goyá Institute is a private association focused on digital governance, culture promotion and socio-environmental justice. Because of its the purposes and acting in favor of research, innovation, education, law and justice, accessibility, and inclusion, the Institute has the following goals:
I – To work with special attention to the protection of indigenous peoples, traditional communities, youth, rural populations, people with disabilities, women, refugees, and other groups considered marginalized;
II – To promote the protection of personal, collective, and sensitive data;
III – To defend the fundamental rights to informational self-determination, privacy, collective memory, and equitable access to technologies;
IV – To develop and support interdisciplinary research in the areas of: law; social justice; data protection; technological innovation; artificial intelligence; access to education and knowledge; accessibility; inequality; inclusion; traditional knowledge and territories; and other topics considered relevant;
V – Strengthen the data sovereignty of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, promoting actions that respect their knowledge, worldviews, and unique forms of governance [this includes supporting and developing mechanisms to protect and enhance traditional knowledge and common goods, including knowledge associated with biodiversity and digital sequence information (DSI), based on national legislation and international human rights and environmental treaties];
VI – Promote inclusive digital and technological justice practices, with a focus on human rights, ethnic-racial equity, gender, youth, and climate justice;
VII – Stimulate the literary, artistic, and cultural production of young people, women, peoples, and communities in situations of social vulnerability, as an instrument of expression, empowerment, and social transformation;
VIII – Participate in the training, education, and development of community leaders, researchers, educators, and rights defenders through workshops, courses, events, and educational programs;
IX – Establish national and international cooperation networks with civil society organizations, universities, collectives, and other institutions that share its principles; X – Conduct advocacy, political advocacy, and participate in legislative, regulatory, and institutional processes, aiming to promote a more just, inclusive, diverse, and digitally secure society;
XI – Develop social and technological innovation projects guided by ethical, intercultural, and sustainable principles;
XII – Build and maintain dedicated communication channels (websites, social media, radio) to publicize information, news, research, and other relevant content;
XIII – Develop, encourage, support, instruct, direct, and guide research and innovation;
XIV – Promote participatory data governance, respecting collective rights, free, prior, and informed consent, and community protocols for the use, sharing, and access to information;
XV – Contribute to strengthening the cybersecurity and digital security of civil society organizations and vulnerable communities through capacity building, appropriate technologies, and community care practices;
XVI – Encourage, support, and implement projects in favor of literature and literary culture;
XVII – Support art and culture, digital or non-digital, such as visual arts, cinema, performing arts, music and literature.
To accomplish these beliefs we have been joining different events and activities individually and as a group since 2023, and now in 2025 we formally started our journey as a legally entity.
